On July 29, three additional anthrax cases were reported in Texas. Two horses in Crockett County and one in Uvalde County had been diagnosed with anthrax on July 22, reported the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC).

To date, there are 14 areas with confirmed cases of anthrax in five Texas counties: Crockett, Kinney, Sutton, Uvalde, and Val Verde. The affected animals include horses, cattle, goats, deer and antelope. The premises with the confirmed equine cases are under quarantine; the quarantine will be removed 10 days after all animals have been vaccinated or 10 days after the last affected horse has died. Domesticated animal owners are encouraged to vaccinate exposed animals.

Anthrax can be found in soils around the world; many horses become infected by grazing areas where anthrax is present. Anthrax can also be spread through the bite of certain flies.

Horses that ingest anthrax spores may have no appetite, colic, have a fever and tremble. Most horses affected with ingested anthrax die. An anthrax vaccine is available; a horse diagnosed with anthrax is typically treated with penicillin or doxycycline.
